Frank Kimmel Gets a Little Dirty and Finishes Fourth at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (August 19, 2014) – Over the course of a 20-race schedule, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards makes two stops on non-asphalt tracks. The first event on dirt took place on Sunday afternoon at the legendary Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. After a rain shower altered the day’s activities, Frank Kimmel completed every lap inside the top-10 and crossed the finish in fourth-place during the SuperChevyStores.com 100.

“Dirt racing is always interesting,” said Kimmel after the race. “The Win-Tron Racing guys worked hard all day and our Ansell-Menards Toyota Camry was pretty good considering we didn’t get a lot of track time before the race started. The car was just a tad too loose at the end for me to make a charge to the lead. But overall, it was a solid day for us and we’ll have a good package at DuQuoin in two weeks.”

With the track surface in a muddy condition due to an overnight rain shower, qualifying was cancelled to allow teams practice time on the one-mile clay oval. Based on the current owner championship point standings, Kimmel started from the third position. Using his veteran knowledge, the 10-time champion took care of his No. 44 machine and visited pit road for the first time as a caution was displayed on lap 29. Crew chief Mark Rette called for four tires, fuel, track bar and air pressure adjustments to alleviate the loose-handling condition.

Restarting from the 10th position on lap 33, Kimmel quickly maneuvered his way back inside the top-five. Under caution on lap 59, Rette made a strategic call to not visit pit road, placing Kimmel in the third position for the following restart. Across the final stretch of the 100-lap event, which remained caution-free, Kimmel was able to hold his position in the top-five and cross the finish line in fourth-place.

This fourth-place finish marked Kimmel’s sixth top-five and 12th top-10 of the 2014 season.

Kimmel and the ARCA Racing Series will now head back to the asphalt at Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin for the Herr’s Live Life with Flavor 200 on Sunday, August 24. The green flag will wave shortly after 3:00 p.m. ET, with live television coverage on the CBS Sports Network. Also, live timing and scoring for all on-track activity can be seen on ARCARacing.com.
